This will be followed by Stirling Howieson discussing The Great Scottish Housing Disaster. Fionn Stevenson will then address the role of Housing and Post Occupancy Evaluation that looks forward as well as backwards, and works on the basis of empowering inhabitants through it! Andy Wightman will contribute thoughts on the subject prior to the discussion.
The event on housing follows from SEDA / Gaia Group conference held in May. We hope the event will strengthen the strong impetus for housing innovation in Scotland.

The History of Eco-Max
Howard Liddell OBE was a co-founder of SEDA. When he died in 2013 he was working on a book, "Eco-Max”, about pioneers of ecological design and their legacy. In 2015 Howard’s widow, Sandy Halliday, gave SEDA's 1st Howard Liddell memorial lecture on this theme. Subsequent years have focused on the legacy of Rachel Carson, Barry Commoner and Ian McHarg.
Speakers
Professor Sandy Halliday CEng Hon FRIAS is a chartered engineer and respected author and communicator with extensive experience of inter-disciplinary working. She established Gaia Research in 1995 to develop sustainable solutions for the built environment. The practice portfolio at any one time embraces research, design, evaluation, dissemination, training and capacity building.
As Professor of Engineering Design for Sustainable Development at The University of Strathclyde she developed a training programme for students and professionals. This was consolidated as the highly acclaimed Sustainable Construction, now in its 2nd Edition, with 120 best practice case studies covering policy, cost, measurement, process, materials and environmental design.
Dr Stirling Howieson is a Chartered Architect and Engineer and has spent over 35 years researching the relationship between house conditions and public health. He is the author of Housing - Raising the Scottish Standard, (Technical Services Agency, 1991) and Housing and Asthma, (Taylor and Francis, 2005). I
n 2019 he won the Gran Prix and Gold Medal at the World Invention Exhibition in Geneva for his micro-solar combined heat and power unit that can provide food processing, water filtration and electricity for off-grid communities.
Professor Fionn Stevenson holds a Chair in Sustainable Design at the University of Sheffield School of Architecture. Her research and consultancy work focuses on developing innovative methods of building performance evaluation in relation to occupancy feedback and social learning in order to improve building design.
Fionn is particularly interested in the control interfaces between buildings and people from a holistic perspective which includes resource use in its widest dimension. Her focus is on housing. Recent publications include: Housing Fit for Purpose: performance, feedback and learning (RIBA Publishing 2019).
