How can natural building methods respond to real client needs while delivering measurable health benefits?

Using a case study of a straw bale home near Southampton, this webinar examines design choices shaped by a young family’s priorities, including accessibility, material safety, and long-term adaptability. The session will present findings from 14 months of indoor environmental monitoring and analysis. By combining lived experience with performance evidence, the speakers will highlight critical decision points, barriers to implementation, and lessons for inclusive, health and comfort focused housing.

Meet the speakers:

Janice Foster is a Chartered Building Services Engineer and researcher specialising in Building Performance Evaluation and health and wellbeing at MEARU, Glasgow School of Art. She contributed to monitoring the indoor environmental quality of four areas of this home and will share the key insights on air temperature and relative humidity.

Sam Foster is Net Zero Team Leader at NatureScot. He was the architect for this new strawbale house, which was designed for a young family. He’ll be focusing on design decisions, materials selection, accessibility and building services choices.
